Missouri University of Science and Technology, more commonly referred to as simply Missouri S&T or University of Missouri–Rolla, is an institution of higher learning located in Rolla, which is the county seat of Phelps County, situated in the US state of Missouri, having a population estimated at a number of more than 18 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
Missouri S&T was established in 1870, as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM), by the 1920s, expanding its focus, into civil, electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering as well as chemistry, physics, mathematics and geology. The institution adopted its current name in January, 2008, and, although known as an engineering school, it currently offers numerous majors in humanities, social sciences, arts, sciences, and business.
The athletic teams at the University of Missouri–Rolla are known as the Miners, name chosen to honor the institution's heritage, who compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference, in various sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are silver and gold and their mascot is Joe Miner.
Among Missouri S&T's notable alumni, there are: Jack Dorsey - American software architect and businessperson best known as the creator of Twitter, Joe N.
